Working as the Director of Photography on Sacred Skin's "Call It Off" was a highly dynamic and energetic shoot. Director Vanessa Robinson approached me with a clear vision: to capture the distinct, vibrant atmosphere of the late '70s and early '80s. To anchor this retro aesthetic, I washed the scenes in a rich, heavily saturated color palette driven by deep reds and blues. The production featured a lot of fun, intricate moving parts that required creative problem-solving on set. One of the primary visual centerpieces was a live, DMX-controlled light wall. This setup demanded constant technical attention to ensure the lighting cues stayed perfectly in sync with the rhythm of the track. Additionally, framing and following roller skaters required us to develop creative tracking techniques to smoothly capture their fluid, high-speed momentum across the space. To elevate the era-specific energy of the video, I incorporated motivated snap zooms and leaned into what I like to call a "campy technique." Instead of rigid, overly polished framing, I allowed the camera to dart around the environment in a jovial, almost spontaneous fashion. By quickly finding the action, capturing the moment, and immediately moving on, we gave the final video a lively, infectious rhythm that perfectly matched the driving energy of the song.
