As the Director of Photography for HGTV's Revealed, my goal was to establish a visual language that distinctly broke away from standard reality television aesthetics. Instead of relying on the traditional renovation show approach of tucking panel lights into corners and blasting rooms with flat illumination, I focused on delivering groundbreaking, highly stylized, and naturally lit visuals. My cinematography centered on amplifying natural environments to make homes and spaces feel like they existed in an ideal, perfectly lit world. To achieve this cinematic quality, I aggressively pushed large light sources through exterior windows in nearly every scene. This created soft, directional, and motivated lighting that felt authentic to the space while dramatically elevating the production value. Most importantly, this series required visual storytelling that honored the themes of history, memory, and the pursuit of self-discovery through our ancestors. Revealed follows designer Veronica Valencia and her team as they deeply research homeowners' family histories, using their cultural roots, stories, and heirlooms to inspire custom home renovations. The camera work and lighting had to respect the profound emotional weight of these heritage-centered designs. By crafting an evocative, warm, and intentional atmosphere, I was able to translate the deep cultural roots of each family into a resonant visual experience, allowing the historical and deeply personal elements of every space to truly shine on screen.
